DBP Receive HSE Endorsement

saferdesign
DBP would like to thank HSE for their continued support.

"HSE recognises the essential part that designers can play in driving forward improvements in the health and safety performance of the UK construction industry.
As such we need to encourage the identification and promotion of innovative design ideas. I welcome the numerous examples of good design practice compiled by Design Best Practice, which may help designers to reduce risks during the construction phase and beyond.
I hope that the practical examples in DBP will help designers to achieve safety through design: identifying and eliminating hazards where they are able, and reducing risks from the hazards that remain. Designers need to understand how their project can be constructed, cleaned and maintained safely.
I am encouraged by the sharing of experiences represented here and look forward to more contributions to this valuable resource in the future."

Philip White
Chief Inspector of Construction and Head of HSEs Construction Division

Hse Update

saferdesign
A recent HSE Bulletin has provided a couple of interesting news articles.

DBP member Brian Street spotted the following items in the August 2010 - HSE construction Infonet bulletin.

The first refers to the CDM Red, Amber and Green list, which can be found here.

Products, Processes and Procedures which may form part of the Contsruction and Design phase are grouped into either Red, Amber or Green sections.
The Red section highlights Products, Processes and Procedures which should be eliminated.
The Amber section highlights those which should be eliminated or reduced as far as possible.
The Green section highlights those which should be positively encouraged.
This simple listing system provides a quick reference guide which can be easily refered to.

The second article refers to an HSE prosecution and provides a reminder of what can happen if responsibilities aren't correctly carried out.

Safer Design Website Link

saferdesign
DBP is pleased to add a new website to the links page.
Saferdesign.org is a new website which is due to be launched on the 1st September 2010.
It was founded to assist Designers, Project Managers, Contractors and Clients in designing out health and safety risks during design development.

"Safer Design believes that along with quality, programme and cost; safety is determined during the design stage. We also believe that a large number of construction and end use safety risks can be designed out during design developement with proactive focused consideration."
"The STAGE review promoted by Safer Design is considered a useful process in managing risk; that improves safety, constructability and maintainability in a coordinated manner with all stakeholders."

Hopefully this website will be of value to some of our users, and we look forward to sharing the learning and experience gained.
